WR Murray 1907
William Richard Murray, a surveyor, who had accompanied R.T. Maurice from Fowler's Bay to Cambridge Gulfin 1902
p.[2]: Some regret was felt by the party that the Tanami country, near
the Western Australian boundary, could not be reached; but the
prolonged drought prohibited any useful work being done in the country
between the telegraph line and the Western Australian border, and the
original scheme had to be abandoned.
[letter of 1/2/1907]
p.20:
June 4th.—… Mount Peake … Had hoped to have obtained sufficient water
somewhere in these parts to keep most of the party whilst the stores at
Barrow’s Creek were obtained, and then make for the Tanami
country. The country to the west is so hopelessly dry that a team
of fat camels would have a hard task.
June 9th.—Team arrived at Barrow’s Creek; … Telegraphed to Hon.
Minister recommending that idea of visiting Tanami be at present
abandoned, and suggesting somewhere east of the line, where sufficient
water for camel purposes was obtainable.
