Abstract: The discovery 19 years ago by J.M. Bowler of artefacts apparently eroding from the Pleistocene foreshore dune at Lake Woods presented a straightforward archaeological problem. If an archaeological excavation could demonstrate that the artefacts were contemporary with the dune sediments then it would follow that these remains would be amongst the most ancient yet discovered in northern Australia.
